Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address

One of the most iconic Speeches and Declarations in American history, the Gettysburg Address encapsulated the principles on which the United States was founded and placed the Civil War within the context of the struggle for freedom and equality for all. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) delivered the speech in 1863 on the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania battlefield, where the Union army had defeated the Confederate army four months previously. Lincoln's speech was unusually brief by standards of the time and met with a mixed reaction. Meanwhile, the Civil War would continue until 1865, the year of Lincoln's assassination. However, the Gettysburg Address' eloquent expression of America's founding principles would become an enduring cultural touchstone, referred to by Martin Luther King, Jr. in his 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial. The Gettysburg Address has been translated to Persian here by Tavaana.
