In 2000, the United Nations recognized health as a fundamental human right. The UN acknowledges that the right to health is conditional upon and linked to the fulfillment of other rights. It asserts that the right to health is not limited to the right to seek healthcare but also encompasses the right of access to “the underlying determinants of health” such as food and clean water and outlines each states’ responsibilities in providing access equitably and without discrimination.
