Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers

This UN resolution, adopted in 1990, was formulated to assist in promoting and ensuring professional standards for lawyers and paralegals. It provides guidelines for judges, prosecutors, members of the executive and the legislature, paralegals and the public in general, and provides guarantees necessary for the defense of everyone charged with a penal offense.
